How to Convert a Bank Statement to Excel or CSV

To convert a bank statement to Excel, you normally retype it by hand or pay for a converter. This turns a PDF bank statement to Excel free, in your browser. Here you just drop the PDF in and download the spreadsheet — three steps, no account, no cost.

1

Choose your PDF

Drag in the statement you downloaded from online banking. Nothing is transmitted — the file is opened by your own browser, on your own device.

2

Check the preview

Every transaction we detect appears on screen with its date, description, debit, credit and running balance, so you can confirm the data is right before you use it.

3

Export what you need

Download clean Excel or CSV, or a QuickBooks-ready file in either the 3-column or 4-column import format.

Your Bank Data Never Leaves Your Computer

Most bank statement converters ask you to upload your file to their servers. That means your account numbers, your balances and every transaction you have made sit on somebody else’s infrastructure, protected by a privacy policy you have to take on faith.

This tool works differently. The entire conversion runs in JavaScript inside your browser. Your PDF is read from your own hard drive, parsed on your own device, and the spreadsheet is generated there too. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and there is nothing for us to delete afterwards — because we never had it.

If you want to prove it: load this page, switch off your Wi-Fi, then convert your statement. It still works, because your data was never going anywhere. As Chartered Accountants who handle client financials every day, that is the only standard we would be comfortable putting our name on.

Import Bank Transactions Into QuickBooks Online

If your bank feed is broken, missing older months, or your bank simply is not supported, a CSV upload is the standard way to get transactions in. QuickBooks Online accepts a plain CSV in either a 3-column or 4-column layout, and this converter exports both.

To upload bank statements to QuickBooks Online: convert your PDF here, download the QuickBooks 3-column file (Date, Description, Amount) or the 4-column file (Date, Description, Debit, Credit), then in QuickBooks go to Transactions → Bank transactions → Upload from file, choose your CSV, map the columns and confirm. Xero and Sage accept the same CSV structure.

A note on .QBO files. Some converters advertise CSV to QBO conversion. We deliberately do not generate .QBO (Web Connect) files: they are an Intuit format tied to registered financial-institution IDs, and files built outside that system are often rejected on import. CSV upload is supported natively by QuickBooks Online and will not fail on you.

Step-by-step walkthroughs: how to import bank transactions into QuickBooks Online and how to reconcile a bank statement in QuickBooks.

What It Handles — and What It Does Not

Converting a bank statement to CSV or Excel works with text-based PDFs — the statements you download straight from online banking. It detects transaction rows by their layout rather than using a template for each individual bank, so it handles most US and international bank and credit card statements.

It does not read scanned statements. If your PDF is a photograph or a scan, it contains images rather than text, and there is nothing for the converter to extract. The fix is easy: download a fresh PDF from online banking instead of scanning a paper copy.

Always review the preview. Bank layouts vary enormously, and an automated reader can occasionally merge a wrapped description or misread an unusual column. The preview table exists so you can check the output against your statement before the numbers go anywhere near your books. For month-end work that has to be right, have a qualified bookkeeper reconcile it.

Bank Statement Converter FAQs

Can I import the file into QuickBooks Online?
Yes. Download either the QuickBooks 3-column CSV (Date, Description, Amount) or the 4-column CSV (Date, Description, Debit, Credit), then in QuickBooks Online go to Transactions, Bank transactions, Upload from file, and map the columns. Xero and Sage accept the same structure.
Do you convert CSV to QBO?
No, and that is deliberate. The .QBO Web Connect format is tied to Intuit-registered financial institution IDs, and files generated outside that system are frequently rejected by QuickBooks on import. CSV upload is natively supported by QuickBooks Online, so that is what we export.
Is my bank statement uploaded to your server?
No. This converter runs entirely inside your web browser. Your PDF is read on your own device and never travels over the internet to us or anyone else. You can confirm it by disconnecting from the internet once the page has loaded — the converter still works.
What file formats can I export to?
Excel (XLSX) with clean Date, Description, Debit, Credit and Balance columns; plain CSV; and QuickBooks-ready CSV in both the 3-column format (Date, Description, Amount) and the 4-column format (Date, Description, Debit, Credit).
Does it work with scanned bank statements?
No. This tool reads text-based PDFs. A scanned or photographed statement is an image and contains no readable text, so nothing can be extracted from it. Download a fresh PDF copy from your online banking instead.
How much does it cost?
It is completely free — no page limits, no subscription, no account. We ask for an email address only at the point you download the converted file.
Which banks are supported?
The converter detects transaction rows by layout rather than using per-bank templates, so it works with most text-based US and international bank and credit card statements. Review the preview table before using the data.
